Victorian Carved Jet Locket

Victorian Carved Jet Locket
A superb and substantial carved whitby jet locket.
Whitby jet is a naturally occurring fossilised wood, around 180 million years old, found primarily along the coast of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. Because of its deep black colour, smooth polish, and ability to be finely carved, it became one of the most iconic materials of Victorian mourning jewellery.
Jet has long been used as a warding stone, thought to absorb negative energy and protect against unwanted influences.
Excellent condition. Glass intact, no chips. Please examine the pictures as they form part of the description.
7.7cm x 42cm including bale.
Supplied on a 45cm 14ct gold filled chain AND with antique lace. Rose included.
