A Mid-late Victorian gold ring set with five graduated deep red garnets and small seed pearls in a richly worked raised setting, with detailed engraved foliate decoration continuing along the shoulders.
The garnets are particularly vibrant, while the original seed pearls soften the setting. The shoulders and shank are engraved with scrolling foliate decoration, giving the ring an unusually ornate profile from every angle.
Garnets were widely used in Victorian sentimental jewellery, their deep red colour associated with love, constancy and devotion, while seed pearls were closely linked with purity and remembrance.
The stones are open-backed, allowing light through the garnets and giving them a particularly rich wine-red colour.
Hallmarked 375 for 9ct gold, Birmingham, with maker’s mark visible. The date stamp is partially illegible. Likely circa 1880s.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear. There appears to be evidence of a re-size to the shank, visible in photographs.
