19th Century Polished Steel Chatelaine

£895.00

A striking and unusually complete late Victorian polished cut steel chatelaine dating to around 1860–1895.

Suspended from a beautifully pierced Gothic Revival clip are nine substantial polished steel chains supporting an exceptional collection of original accessories. Surviving implements include a bodkin, scissors, propelling pencil, notebook, pincushion, thimble bucket, corkscrew and other original fittings, creating an impressive and highly decorative ensemble.

Originally worn clipped to the waistband, the chatelaine served as the Victorian woman’s wearable toolkit, keeping everyday necessities close at hand. Today, its bold silhouette and industrial steel construction feel remarkably contemporary, making it as much a statement piece as an object of historical interest. Examples retaining so many original accessories are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Belt not included.

Condition: Very good antique condition. The steel has a lovely bright polish with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The accessories appear to have remained together for many years and the piece presents exceptionally well.

Date: circa 1880 - 1895

Materials: Polished cut steel.
