A wonderfully evocative 9ct gold Georgian memorial ring, dated 1810, centred with rock crystal and framed by a halo of faceted black onyx.
Black onyx has long been associated with protection, strength and grounding, while in mourning jewellery its deep black colour became a powerful symbol of grief and remembrance. Set against the clarity of rock crystal, the contrast feels especially poignant - darkness surrounding light. Black onyx was used in mourning jewellery for its sombre black appearance and association with grief.
The reverse is beautifully engraved “W. Dodds, 13 October 1810, aged 57”.
