Victorian Mourning Buckle Ring, circa mid-late 19th century

£450.00

15ct gold, Size O, 1.8 g

An unusual and poignant Victorian mourning buckle ring in 15-carat gold, black enamel and seed pearls. In the 19th century, the buckle motif was widely understood as a symbol of binding, fidelity, and constancy, making it particularly suited to sentimental and memorial jewellery.

The shoulders are worked with geometric black enamel panels, recalling Gothic architectural patterning. Black enamel was a recognised material language of mourning and remembrance in Victorian jewellery. At the centre, a small cluster of seed pearls -traditional symbols of tears and purity, softens the severity of the design whilst emphasising its commemorative intent.

Size O (UK)

Weight: 1.8 g

Condition: Good antique condition, age appropriate wear to the enamel, evidence of early re-size. A beautiful patina in my opinion.
