An unusual likely Victorian revival vintage gold ring, set with a large oval cabochon garnet.
The garnet is held in a raised, open-backed claw setting with sculptural leaf-shaped shoulders and small circular openings connecting the setting to a slender gold band. The openwork construction gives the ring a distinctly delicate, almost botanical character.
Garnets were particularly favoured in 19th-century jewellery, their dark red colour associated with love, fidelity and enduring affection. The stone’s extraordinary depth of colour is especially striking against the warm gold.
