Sterling Silver AEI Locket

£295.00

A bold Victorian sterling silver locket, engraved with the intertwined AEI monogram - standing for Amity, Eternity, Infinity and used throughout the 19th century as an emblem of lasting devotion. AEI lockets hold a special place within Victorian sentimental jewellery - functioning as discreet declarations of loyalty and eternal connection.

AEI is the Greek word for “always” (αεί) and was adopted into British and continental jewellery design as shorthand for eternity and constancy.

From this root came several later readings:

- “Amity, Eternity, Infinity”, an English reinterpretation expressing friendship and devotion.

-“Amor, Eterna, Immortalis”, a Latinised version used by jewellers to make the meaning explicit: eternal and immortal love.

The locket is sold with a 45cm recycled sterling silver chain and a length of black antique lace. Further chains available separately.

Condition: Good antique condition, the locket opens and closes cleanly on its original hinge. One glazed compartment holds a lock of hair mounted on silk. This is removable if desired.

Please examine the pictures as they form part of the description.

Locket: Approx 6cm x 3.5cm with bail.
