A rare mid-Victorian cut steel chatelaine dating to the third quarter of the nineteenth century. Belt not included.
The chatelaine is centred by a faceted cut steel mount from which five chains suspend an original assortment of domestic and sewing accessories. The surviving implements include a cylindrical needle case, retractable tape measure retaining its original ribbon (remaining in-tact, which is rare), acorn-shaped pin-cushion, wax seal and button hook.
Originally worn suspended from the waist, chatelaines served as both practical household companions and symbols of a Victorian woman’s daily responsibilities. Complete examples retaining their original accessories are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Condition
Very good antique condition with an attractive age-related patina throughout. The cut steel retains its original finish with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The accessories remain securely attached, and the retractable tape measure retains its original ribbon showing expected age-related wear. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
