A beautiful example of mid-to-late 19th century mourning jewellery, this large Victorian vulcanite locket features a high-relief design of birds nesting to the front. In Victorian symbolism, the bird at rest in its nest represents home, protection, and enduring love - meanings often associated with mourning and remembrance.
Vulcanite is a hardened rubber compound used extensively in mourning jewellery due to its dark appearance and ability to be intricately moulded. It became popular from the 1860s onward, especially after Prince Albert’s death, when mourning jewellery surged.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. Locket intact. Retains the original brass photo bezel and glass cover. Hinge and closure functioning securely. Please examine the pictures as they form part of the description.
Available with both antique lace and 45cm 14ct gold filled chain options (or silver chain upon request).
Size:
Approx. 5 cm high (including bale) x 3.5 cm wide x 2.2cm deep.
