Late Georgian / Early Victorian Hairwork Memorial Brooch On Choker

£295.00

Dated 1837

Mounted as a Double Velvet Choker

A transitional mourning piece dated September 1837, at the threshold between the Georgian and Victorian eras.

The brooch contains finely laid hairwork beneath its original glazed panel - a characteristic practice of early nineteenth-century memorial jewellery. Its understated form aligns with late Georgian jewellery design, while the date places it at the very beginning of Victoria’s reign.

Now mounted on a double layer of black velvet to be worn close to the neck without the pin digging in. The brooch remains intact and may be removed and worn as a pin if desired.

Reverse inscription:

“In Memory of the Rev. J.A. Day

Died Sep 16th 1837

Aged 69 Years”

Gold (acid tested as 9ct or above).

Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear.

Brooch - 20mm x 14mm

2.5 grams

Choker - 20mm wide. The choker is an adjustable length from 28cm minimum.
