A striking gilt-metal serpent necklace, circa 1920sA30s, formed from a flexible snake chain ending in a sculpted serpent’s head with engraved scales, dark red glass eyes and a contrasting copper-coloured tail.
Serpent jewellery carried long associations with eternity, renewal and protection, and remained a powerful motif into the Art Deco period, when older symbolic forms were reworked in a more stylised, graphic language.
The necklace sits closely around the neck with the serpent’s head forming the focal point.
