A Victorian in memoriam locket, with solid 18ct yellow gold set into a polished onyx plaque, finished with seed pearls.
Onyx has long been associated with protection, mourning, and the containment of grief - believed to absorb sorrow and guard the wearer through periods of transition - while seed pearls were traditionally used in mourning jewellery to symbolise tears, purity, and enduring love.
The reverse opens to reveal a glazed compartment, traditionally used to hold a lock of hair or a personal memento. The glass panel is a later, discreet acetate replacement, fitted sympathetically to preserve both the locket’s integrity and its wearability. A pressed violet has been added.
The gold is unmarked, as is often the case with Victorian pieces, and has been professionally tested by acid and electronic gold testing, confirming solid 18ct gold purity.
