A mid-Victorian memorial brooch dated 1851, worked in black enamel with scrolling gilt decoration and a central black panel framed by seed pearls. The reverse is engraved:
“In Memory of Mary Ann Davidson
Died 13th March 1851
Aged 30.”
Black enamel and pearls were central to the Victorian language of mourning, the pearls often carrying associations with tears, while the named and dated inscription makes this a particularly personal piece.
