Victorian Bullseye Agate Brooch 1860 - 1880
A Victorian bullseye agate brooch, circa set with a large polished oval stone showing a striking concentric white band against near-black agate. The reverse reveals the warmer translucent brown of the natural stone.
Set in a gilt-metal mount with twisted ropeborder, long pin and small suspension loops.
Bullseye agate was particularly suited to Victorian Jewellery: the dark stone aligned naturally with the period’s language of mourning and remembrance, while the concentric “eye” pattern carried associations of protection, watchfulness and steadiness. Each stone was cut to emphasise its natural banding, making every example slightly different.
In good antique condition with age-related wear to the gilt finish.
