A substantial oval mourning locket, 8 × 4.5cm including the bail, circa 1860-1880, carved in polished black Whitby Jet with a leaf-edged surround and geometric border.
One side features an intricately carved AEI - derived from the Greek aei, “always” or “forever,” and popularly read in Victorian sentimental jewellery as Amity, Eternity, Infinity. The reverse reveals a faded photographic portrait of a gentleman beneath glass, held within a gilt inner frame.
Suspended from black velvet ribbon.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related surface wear and fading to the photograph. Age commensurate wear to the ridges on the edge. Please examine the photos as they form part of the description.
