A Victorian mourning brooch centred with woven hairwork beneath its original glazed panel, set within an ornate gilt mount of scrolling architectural form.
Hair jewellery functioned as a material act of remembrance - intimate and enduring. The dark, finely woven ground sits in deliberate contrast to the bright gilt surround.
Now mounted on double-layered black velvet so it may be worn close to the neck without the pin digging in (my addition). The brooch remains structurally intact and may be removed and worn as originally intended.
