A substantial Victorian rosary necklace in Whitby jet, formed from carved jet beads linked with gilt chain and ending in a large plain cross with a carved floral detail at the centre.
Jet was closely associated with mourning and remembrance throughout the 19th century, particularly after the death of Prince Albert in 1861, while the rosary form gives the piece an explicitly devotional character. The combination of polished black jet, religious symbolism and the long drop gives it a dramatic, distinctly Victorian gothic presence.
Cross: 8.5 x 5cm
Rosary length: 52cm
Condition: Good antique condition overall. The Whitby jet shows age-related surface wear, including light scratching, rubbing and some dulling to the polished face of the cross, with further wear around the central carved boss and edges. The fittings are secure. Please examine the photographs as they form part of the description.
