19th Century Blackened Steel Heart Locket Circa 1850—1880

£195.00

A nineteenth-century blackened steel heart locket on an elongated link chain.

The surface has developed a deep, matte patina, giving the piece a subdued, almost austere presence. The locket opens to two empty compartments for personal keepsakes.

Blackened steel jewellery was closely associated with Victorian mourning. The heart form, rendered in this darkened finish can be interpreted as restrained and private  concerned with memory and preservation rather than ornamental display.

A beautifully simple and Gothic piece.
