A late 19th-century Victorian gold heart locket of compact proportions. The front is decorated with a star motif set with seed pearls and centred by a small garnet (untested), a combination commonly used in Victorian sentimental jewellery. Star motifs were associated with guidance and constancy, while seed pearls frequently appear in memorial jewellery of the period.
The locket opens to an internal compartment originally intended for a photograph or keepsake. This comes on a 45cm 14ct gold-filled chain.
