More about ‘AEI’ in Victorian Symbolism

“AEI” is the Greek word for “always” (αεί).  That simple word was adopted into British and continental jewellery design as shorthand for eternity, continuity, and constancy.

From this root came multiple readings:

“Amity, Eternity, Infinity” - a later English reinterpretation aligning with friendship and devotion.

“Amor, Eterna, Immortalis” - a Latinised interpretation used by jewellers to make the meaning explicit: love eternal and immortal.

So, the Victorians themselves likely saw it as both a word and a code to mark a talisman that condensed the idea of ‘forever’.
