Victorian Jet AEI Locket

A rare Victorian jet locket with the AEI inscription- interpreted as “Amity, Eternity, Infinity” or  the latin “Amor, Eterna, Immortalis”which symbolises enduring love and remembrance.

Jet, the fossilized wood of ancient Araucaria trees, was prized for its magical and metaphysical resonance. Regarded as a stone of protection and purification, it was often worn to absorb negative energy and guard the spirit in times of transition, a powerful link between the earthly and the spiritual realms.

The locket opens to a beautifully engraved silver inner compartment for two photographs or mementoes (the rose pictured here is included). The compartments are velvet lined and glazed.

Condition: This presents beautifully. There is historical wear to one inner side where the bale meets the other side when closed. This has been professionally restored and is only visible under very close inspection. Please examine the photographs as they form part of the description.

Measurements: 6cm with bale.

The velvet ribbon is included but this is available on either a 45cm silver chain or a 45cm gold filled chain. Please email with your choice. The bale can also be oxidised (blackened) on request.

More about ‘AEI’ in Victorian Symbolism

“AEI” is the Greek word for “always” (αεί).  That simple word was adopted into British and continental jewellery design as shorthand for eternity, continuity, and constancy.

From this root came multiple readings:

“Amity, Eternity, Infinity” - a later English reinterpretation aligning with friendship and devotion.

“Amor, Eterna, Immortalis” - a Latinised interpretation used by jewellers to make the meaning explicit: love eternal and immortal.

So, the Victorians themselves likely saw it as both a word and a code to mark a talisman that condensed the idea of ‘forever’.
