Victorian Vulcanite Mourning Locket
A good example of mid-to-late 19th century mourning jewellery, this large Victorian vulcanite locket features a high-relief grape and vine motif to the front, symbolic of eternity and the cycle of life and death-common iconography in mourning adornments of the period.
Vulcanite is a hardened rubber compound used extensively in mourning jewellery due to its dark appearance and ability to be intricately moulded.
Condition:
Raised decoration of grape clusters and leaves, with crisp definition and minimal surface wear.Interior: Retains the original brass photo bezel and glass cover, housing a photograph of a Victorian woman.
Good antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and material. Hinge and closure functioning securely.
