Elegant 19th Century Gilt Metal and Onyx Fob Pendant with Classical Ridged Frame

£140.00

This attractive 19th-century fob pendant is a fine example of Victorian-era design, featuring a polished slab of deep black onyx set within an ornate gilt metal frame. The frame’s ridged, architectural design draws inspiration from classical antiquity, reflecting the neoclassical revival that swept through Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Fob pendants such as this were often attached to pocket watch chains, serving both a decorative and functional role. Typically worn by men, these pendants sometimes held intaglio seals, initials, or symbolic carvings- but even when left blank, the use of a fine stone like onyx signalled refinement and taste. Onyx was a popular gemstone for mourning jewellery and classical motifs alike. The ridged design may also allude to ancient columnar architecture, a common reference point in neoclassical art and ornamentation.

Good Antique condition- please examine the pictures as they form part of the description.

Fob is 2cm x 2.5cm.

Sold with a 45cm 14ct gold filled chain.
