Impressive 19th Century Gold-Plated Wax Seal Pendant with Roman Soldier in Carnelian

£175.00

This striking and substantial wax seal pendant dates to the 19th century. The focal point is an intaglio of a Roman soldier,  carved into a richly coloured chunk of red carnelian- a gemstone prized for its durability, vibrant hue and ability to leave a clean impression in wax. Surrounding the stone is a finely detailed floral foliate gold-plated frame, typical of the Victorian era’s fascination with classical motifs and nature-inspired design.

During the 19th century, particularly in the Victorian period (1837–1901), there was a strong revival of classical antiquity, driven by archaeological discoveries in places like Pompeii and Herculaneum. This pendant reflects that neoclassical influence. Wax seal pendants were not only functional, used to seal letters and documents with personal or family crests, but also served as fashion accessories that conveyed taste, status, and sometimes hidden messages through their symbolism.

The image of the Roman soldier- likely representing valour, discipline, or a connection to Roman virtue- would have been a powerful motif for the wearer.

Good Antique condition- please examine the pictures as they form part of the description.

Fob is 3cm x 3cm.

Sold with a 45cm 14ct gold filled chain.
