Victorian Mourning Brooch With Hairwork

Victorian Mourning Brooch With Hairwork
A striking and emotive example of Victorian mourning jewellery. The front features a central oval glazed compartment containing a beautifully preserved lock of hair, curled in a naturalistic, almost floral motif. Surrounding the compartment is a halo of seed pearls- commonly used in mourning jewellery to represent tears- set against a ground of deep black enamel, a traditional symbol of mourning.
Framing the piece is an ornate border of baroque-style, scrolled gilt metal. The contrast between the glossy enamel, soft pearls, and warm golden tones makes for a visually powerful design.
The reverse reveals a second glazed panel with an intricately woven section of hair. A sturdy pin and C-clasp fastening remain intact.
Materials: Gilt metal, black enamel, seed pearls, human hair under glass.
Era: Victorian, mid to late 19th century.
Size: 6cm x 4cm
Condition:
Front: Excellent antique condition - enamel and pearls are intact and vibrant.
Reverse: Good antique condition - some wear and surface marks to the gilt metal, as expected with age.
