Victorian Whitby Jet Pendant with Reverse Glass Compartment – circa 1870s
This is an original Victorian-era pendant carved from Whitby jet, dating to approximately the 1870s. This piece is a non-hinged locket, with a fixed front and a shallow, removable glass compartment on the reverse, which contains a miniature preserved rose.
Material: Whitby jet (fossilised wood)
Date: circa 1870
Dimensions:
Reverse: Inset glass compartment containing a miniature rose.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with minor wear consistent with age; glass intact, jet stable (no chips), join visible in the bale (does not affect use).
Supplied with a 45cm 14ct gold filled chain AND a thin velvet ribbon.
Context and Significance:
Mourning jewellery became popular in the Victorian period, particularly after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Whitby jet, a lightweight and highly polishable material, was uniquely associated with mourning practices and was mined and worked exclusively in Whitby, North Yorkshire.
