Victorian Large Whitby Jet Locket

£240.00

A substantial Victorian Whitby jet locket, carved in an oval form with detailing around the frame. The back features a preserved red pressed flower set behind glass.

Whitby jet is a naturally occurring fossilised wood, around 180 million years old, found primarily along the coast of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. Because of its deep black colour, smooth polish, and ability to be finely carved, it became one of the most iconic materials of Victorian mourning jewellery.

Jet has long been used as a warding stone, thought to absorb negative energy and protect against unwanted influences.

Size: 5.5cm x 4cm with bail.

Condition: Excellent antique condition - please examine the pictures as they form part of the description.

This comes on a 47cm 14ct gold filled chain and with an antique lace option.

Gilt metal bail and frame.
