Victorian Celestial Black Enamel & 9ct gold locket

£425.00
sold out

A refined Victorian locket in deep black enamel, set with star motifs picked out in fine gold and seed pearls. The stars are arranged against a dark ground like a night sky, drawing on 19th century celestial symbolism where stars represented guidance, constancy and the idea of light enduring through darkness. Such motifs were often chosen for sentimental jewellery, associated with remembrance, hope and the belief in unseen bonds.

The locket opens to its original glazed compartment, now holding a pressed flower added by me. The reverse is finished in plain black enamel.

The mount and fittings acid test as 9ct gold. The seed pearls are natural, irregular and entirely consistent with late 19th century workmanship. Pearls of this kind were frequently used in mourning and sentimental jewellery, valued for their quiet lustre and associations with purity and tears. The locket is suspended from a later fine 45cm 14ct gold-filled chain, selected to suit the piece but not original. A length of black antique lace ribbon is also included.

Details
