Victorian Mourning Locket - 9ct Gold Front & Back, “In Memory Of” Black Enamel

Victorian Mourning Locket - 9ct Gold Front & Back, “In Memory Of” Black Enamel
Late 19th century. Black enamel and 9ct gold front and back, emblazoned with the motto “in memory of” across a sword - a symbol of remembrance and sacrifice.
Victorian mourning jewellery often used the sword motif to represent courage in the face of loss, and the continuation of spirit beyond death. In the 19th century, such lockets often held meaning beyond adornment: worn close to the heart, they served as small vessels of memory and belief. The contrast of gold and black enamel represents light in darkness.
Condition: Good antique condition. A very slight dink to the enamel at the lower left edge, only visible upon very, very close inspection. Presents beautifully. Please examine the pictures as they form part of the description.
Measurements: Including the bail, it measures 3cm x 2cm.
